Here we are in February, the month of groundhogs, lovers and voyageurs. We are now almost halfway through the month and, although the groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter, it is beginning to look like spring is already here. Of course that is typical Festival du Voyageur weather. No matter what the weather forecast says, the moment the ice sculptures are built, Mother Nature immediately attempts to melt them.
At any rate, I don’t know if Groundhog Day means the same thing in Manitoba as it does for the rest of the world anyway. For us, six more weeks of winter from February 2nd is an early spring.
But no matter what the weather is, for the lovers of the world, Valentine’s Day should be a day to warm your heart and snuggle up to those you love. For those guys out there who are in relationships, if you want that relationship to be a happy one, you may not want to forget this day.
As I mentioned, this is also the time of year for Winnipeggers to celebrate winter with the ultimate winterfest, Festival du Voyageur. Music, dancing, food, ice sculptures, crafts, history, everything you need for a great outdoor party, even for a winter wimp like me. If you haven’t been to one, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
And groundhogs notwithstanding, February does signal that we are in the home stretch towards spring and blessed summer. Ahhh, I can almost feel the warmth now. Or is that just my toes thawing out? Until next month, take care and happy reading.
